One of the greatest works of the late Penderecki - «Polish Requiem» - written over several decades (1980-2005). In 1980 came his first piece - «Lacrimosa», written in memory of Gdansk dock, shot during the uprising against a totalitarian regime ten years ago, the composer dedicated to this music Lehu Valenca and his alliance «Solidarity». In 1981 he appeared «Agnus Dei», dedicated to the memory of deeply revered in Poland, Cardinal Vyshinskomu in 1982 - «Recordare Jesu pie», written for the occasion in which canonized blessed priest Maximilian Kolbe, who in 1941, saving another prisoner, voluntarily went to death in Auschwitz. In 1984 - the fortieth anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising against Nazi occupation - was created «Dies Irae» (other than the same compositions in 1967). The first edition of «Polish Requiem» first performed in Stuttgart in September 1984 under the management of Mstislav Rostropovich. In 1993, the composer to add to the score «Sanctus» (in the form of «Polish Requiem» was performed at the festival Penderecki in Stockholm on 11 November 1993 under control of the author).
